Fort Portal

Fort Portal, a magnificent city in Kabarole District, western Uganda, was named after Sir Gerald Herbert Portal. Sit Gerald Portal, a British administrator, was appointed as the Special Commissioner to East Africa in 1892. He was tasked with visiting Uganda to determine if the area was worth becoming a British protectorate to replace the defunct Imperial British East Africa Company. The fort was eventually built in the late 1800s to defend the Tooro Kingdom against King Kabalega of Bunyoro and his frequent guerilla incursions, hence the name Fort Portal.

The Batooro are the majority ethnic group in Fort Portal City. The Batooro have a long history of cultural rituals, local handicrafts, and patriotism. Culture is vital among the Batooro, and it is instilled in every kid. Cotton, peanuts (groundnuts), sesame, corn (maize), coffee, tobacco, castor oil seeds, tea, tropical fruits, and vegetables are all major commodities. A lot of tea farms are centered east of town. Tea, coffee, vegetable oils, leather, fruit, dairy, meat, cotton, grain, and tobacco are all processed. Beverages, textiles, furniture, paper, soap, candy, shoes, and metal items are all examples of industrial products.

Tourism is the primary economic activity of Fort Portal City, with the main attractions being crater lakes, gorilla tracking, and hot springs. Fort Portal has been known as Uganda's tourist capital because of its natural beauty. The city's name comes from the many tourist attractions it offers.
